The Full Story

Gutters are the most-skipped line item on hail and wind claims, and that's exactly why Midstate documents them on every storm inspection. A hailstone that dents the roof also dents the aluminum gutter and downspout — and Oklahoma carriers will replace damaged gutters when they're documented in the original scope of loss. If they're left out of the first estimate, you end up paying for them later, out of pocket, after the new roof is done.

Midstate installs seamless aluminum gutters in a full color palette, plus heavier 6" K-style and half-round profiles for properties with steep roof pitches or large drainage areas. Gutter guards are available on request, though we're honest that not every property needs them — Oklahoma's lack of heavy fall leaf canopy means a lot of homes do fine without guards if the gutters are pitched and cleaned correctly.

Why Gutters Get Missed on Hail Claims

Adjusters work fast, especially in peak Oklahoma storm season. Most carrier inspections clock in under 30 minutes; the focus is on the roof itself, where the dollar amount is largest. Gutters get a glance and move on — and a hailstone that left noticeable dents in the aluminum often gets written off as "cosmetic." It isn't. Cosmetic damage to soft metal is still covered under nearly every Oklahoma policy when it's documented properly with close-up photographs and a HAAG-format scope. Midstate documents gutters and downspouts on every storm inspection — so when the original scope of loss comes back without them, we file a supplement with the photographs and the scope expands.

5" vs 6" K-Style — The Drainage Math

A 5" K-style gutter handles about 2,500 sq ft of drainage area at standard 2"×3" downspout spacing. A 6" K-style with 3"×4" downspouts handles closer to 5,500 sq ft. The right size depends on your roof footprint, slope, and how much drainage area each downspout has to carry. Where 5" overflows during heavy spring rain: large OKC-metro homes with multi-slope roofs draining to a single downspout, two-story homes with deep eaves, and roofs with valleys that concentrate a lot of square footage at one corner. If your existing 5" gutters overflow at the corners during normal Oklahoma thunderstorms, the replacement should size up to 6" — same install cost, materially better drainage.

Gutter Guards in Oklahoma — When They're Worth It

The honest answer depends on your tree canopy. Properties under heavy oak, elm, or pecan cover get clogged gutters every fall and benefit clearly from quality gutter guards (aluminum micromesh is the long-term winner; foam inserts and screens are budget options that work for a few years). Newer suburban builds in Edmond, Yukon, or Mustang typically don't have the canopy density to justify the upgrade — properly pitched 5" or 6" gutters cleaned annually do fine. We'll look at your specific tree coverage at the inspection and tell you which case you're in. Don't pay for guards you don't need; do pay for them if your gutters fill up every November.

Color Matching on Existing Trim and Fascia

Seamless aluminum gutters are available in 20+ standard colors plus paint-matching from a chip or trim sample. On most homes the goal is to match the existing fascia or trim so the new gutters disappear into the roofline. Bring us a paint chip from your trim color or a piece of existing fascia at the inspection — we can match within one shade on most active palettes. On homes with heavily faded trim or discontinued original paint, we'll show you the closest available match and let you decide whether to color-match or paint the trim to match the new gutter. If the fascia itself is rotted or hail-damaged (common on hail claims), we coordinate fascia replacement with the gutter install in the same scope.
